As
President I get emails from all sorts of people asking me and/or PHIP to
plug this product or that. I mean some of them are out there, like the Swiss
made Parrot Head Letter openers with pocket clip. Anyway I get this email from a
publicist telling me about this great book that has everything a Parrot head
would enjoy in it. I know some of you got a similar email until the publicist
got yelled at by the author.
So anyway, I am reading the email and well the name sort of seems familiar, so I
do a little research, check out the website and huzzah, C. G. McDaniel is none
other than an old Compuserve pal who I knew as "Chris St. Somewhere" now, this
was back before I invented the internet back on the old Florida Forum on
Compuserve. So I wrote back to the publicist and gave her some info and asked
her to say hello to Chris. So, Chris and I emailed back and forth, found out he
lives in Jupiter, FL (what ever club is close by better recruit him). He sent me
a copy of the book. Well, if you send me a book I will start to read it, I may
not finish it, and if I don't finish it you know it was bad. But, I did finish
"Nautical Contraband" by C. G. McDaniel I could hardly put it down. It was
exciting, it was fun, it was adventurous, it was sad... oh I could go on and on,
it was one of the best books I have read this year. Now, a Parrot head can tell
that Chris is one of us, I mean you trip over Bubba references all over the
place, not as bad as Jimmy's books but they are there. I could go on and on
about this book, but suffice to say I throughly enjoyed it and am waiting for
the next one. So check out http://www.krewe-of-jupiter.com/ to get the book
direct from the author, you can also find it at Amazon.
Oh and I did tell the publicist I would send her publicity sheet to you guys...

"Nautical Contraband"
by C. G. McDaniel
AVIATION MEETS MARGARITAVILLE IN ISLAND-HOPPING ADVENTURE -- Lost treasure
storylines revived in impressive debut mystery
From Charleston, S. C. and Jupiter, Florida to St. Bart’s, Aruba and Jamaica,
three friends the Krewe-of-Jupiter -- take flight, literally, in C. G.
McDaniel’s, "Nautical Contraband." Aboard a rickety old Catalina PBY-5A flying
boat named Lady Orleans, the Krewe takes readers on a surreal journey throughout
Southern Florida and into the Caribbean in search of an ancient map and a lost
treasure once stolen by Stede Bonnet, The Gentleman Pirate. And that’s just part
of the plot.
McDaniel’s South Florida mystery is filled with eccentric and exotic characters,
including an ex-Seabee computer hacker who lives in a forgotten underground
bunker, the priest of a snake-handling tent revival, and a sexy Cuban
ex-socialite. He weaves a fast-paced tale of adventure where three friends,
graduates of The Citadel, who meet up again after twenty years in Jupiter,
Florida and find themselves drawn together in hot pursuit of a stolen ancient
heirloom.
In their quest for the ultimate ‘nautical contraband,’ they stumble upon
long-forgotten religions, pirate castles, island strip bars and fishing yachts
and find themselves confused by the bizarre and unexplainable side of the
tropics in their island adventure.
"Nautical Contraband" is McDaniel’s first Florida mystery series based on
characters from his popular serial fiction featured in "Caribbean Travel" and
"Bahama Breeze." The next book in the Krewe of Jupiter series, "Rhumb/ Line
Bend," will be released in late 2005.
McDaniel intertwines real-life extraordinary historical events and locations
into stories, adding depth to his outrageous mystery trip.
"My love of vibrant and sometimes tacky Florida, Caribbean ruins, and a
fascination with the nearly extinct flying boat led me to create The Krewe-of-Jupiter
mystery series," says McDaniel.
Escapism runs deep within McDaniel’s novel, with particular appeal for men.
Aside from boats, cars, motorcycles and planes, he sought to capture ‘real’
things most men dream about.
"I give the characters in my book the opportunity to see and do things that
every red blooded American guy dreams of doing. I want the reader to live the
journey with the Krewe of Jupiter. There’s enough seriousness in the world
today; we all need good old-fashioned escapism. When a reader finishes one of my
books and puts it on the shelf, I want him to feel like he is coming home after
the adventure of a life time with his best buddies. A little of his heart goes
up on that shelf till next time."
The book was published in April 2005. Review copies available upon request.

Lost PHlock has done it again! The Jan-March 2008 edition of Tradewind Times, the official newsletter of Parrot Heads in Paradise Inc., again
has our club among those who qualify for the "Domino College Dean's List."
The list honors clubs that have completed a charitable or environmental act
during the past quarter. BLPH also was on the list in the January-March 2005,
April-June 2005 edition of Tradewind Times. Congratulations to us for the good deeds we
do.
There
was much discussion about each clubs oldest Parrot Head, and then there was
some question as to Captain Tony Terracino's age. Well, Jo and I went out
walking the dogs last night and stopped by Capt Tony's and asked him. He was
born August 10, 1916.
